HS2 is hitting the headlines again after Levelling-Up Secretary, Micheal Gove, expressed his uncertainty as to whether the service will terminate at Euston.
This has only added to existing concerns that the Euston segment of the high-speed rail will never be completed.
Despite pumping £568m into the development of the London terminus, it is not expected to open until 2041-43 - if at all.
Asked whether HS2 would go to Euston, Gove replied: “I don’t know what the final decision will be about where the terminus will be.”
Adding that he couldn’t however see “any conceivable circumstances” why it wouldn’t.
The Cabinet minister also suggested that there has been some back and forth over whether the HS2 route should terminate at Euston or Old Oak Common.
An HS2 spokesperson said: “Euston is one of the most complex parts of the HS2 route to build, but we are committed to working with DfT and partners to consider the recommendations of the NAO report, and to ensure we get an affordable station that is right for the local community and passengers.”
