While getting to work on time may not seem like a big deal, it can have a massive impact on your professional image, your team’s work morale and your overall productivity. In this blog, we look closer at why punctuality matters in the world of work.
Showcases professionalism
Being punctual builds trust by showing that you are reliable and will be where you said you’d be and when you said you’d be there! Clients and colleagues are going to struggle to respect the project manager who turns up whenever they please or cancel meetings last minute because they forget they had clashing commitments. Use your calendar, communicate clearly with people and keep your promises.
You set a good example
If you’re in a senior position, rocking up to the office with a coffee way past 10 am, while still maintaining the expectation that your team should be in at 9 am sharp, then you are a hypocrite…sorry! This will undoubtedly damage team morale and set the unbalanced precedent that it’s one rule for you, and another rule for them. Either your office is flexible or you have a set time where everyone is expected to be present and ready to work. Obviously, life happens and this isn’t always possible - but if you make the effort as a senior then you set a good example for everyone else.
It’s less stressful
No one likes rushing around trying to find their keys, one shoe on, trying to look up tube times and feed the dog. It’s stressful, and stress can have serious consequences for our health and well-being. Turning up on time means you can prepare for the day ahead calmly (and grab a cheeky coffee on your commute!).
Demonstrates your employability
You don’t want your employer questioning if you’re the right person for the job a week in, do you? If you are consistently late to work or hopping on calls half way through, then your professional reputation may start to suffer as a result.
Helps you get the job done!
If you stick to your schedule then you can get all your tasks done in a timely manner - and who knows? Maybe you’ll be able to leave work early if you crack on early doors. Plus, it shows your employer that you respect their rules and could help you win that promotion over others if you demonstrate consistency! Early bird catches the worm, after all.
