The newly coined term ‘career cushioning’ means giving yourself an alternative option or safety net to fall back on should you resign or be let go from your current role. This ‘career cushion’ could be anything from learning a new skill as a way to increase your desirability within the job market, to actively seeking and applying for new opportunities.
Where did it come from?
It is believed the expression derived from the phrase ‘to cushion your landing’ but it could also be a semantically-related alternative to ‘security blanket’. Anyway, regardless of its etymology, it’s no surprise that career cushioning rising in popularity considering the current climate.
In fact, looking at Google Trends you can see that the usage of the word spiked during the wake of the pandemic in 2020 and then again last month when food prices were still at a record high.
This captures the correlation between the financial uncertainty being felt by workers across the UK and job security fears - hence the birth of ‘career cushioning’!
Should I consider career cushioning?
While some might argue that career cushioning is unethical, we don’t see anything wrong with assessing your options from time to time. After all, the career market is always changing and there might be roles out there that you didn’t even know existed!
