So, you’ve decided to go through the stressful process of looking for a new job, improved your CV, brushed up on your interview skills, attended interviews, worried over every application, and finally received an offer that suits you and would like to accept. However, you inform your employer, and they offer you a better salary and perhaps more benefits. What should you do now?
A counteroffer summed up is an offer from your current employer to rival the offer that you have been made by a new employer to encourage you to stay within your current role. Counteroffers stem from the inconvenience that your employer will face if you decide to leave as they will have to look for someone to replace you within your notice period.
Firstly, you must remind yourself as to why you started searching for a new job in the first place, if this was due to poor management affecting your wellbeing, no opportunity for career development, not enjoying your role or any other reasons that more money and more benefits will not change, then you should reject the counteroffer and accept your fresh new start.
However, if you genuinely enjoy your current job, team, manager, organisation etc and only decided to look somewhere else perhaps because you were rejected a pay rise or more benefits, your approach may be slightly different. If your counteroffer overcomes all those issues that you faced and you will receive what you wanted, you could consider accepting it. Ensure you get this counteroffer in writing along with a new contract signed by your employer if required before you make your decision. You should also consider how long you’ve worked at your current company, if you’ve spent many years there, it would be good for your career development to diversify your employment background and experience a new environment or even industry.
Although, LinkedIn has found that 90% of employees who do accept a counteroffer go back to searching for a new job within 6 months. Ensure to weigh up the pros and cons of both accepting a counteroffer and accepting a new job offer thoroughly, perhaps talk to friends and family and never decide straight away, give yourself a few days to think through everything. Good luck!
