National Inclusion Week is an annual event dedicated to promoting inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. To mark the occasion, this blog will explore the ways in which we can help drive equity and equality for all in the built environment sector.
What is inclusion?
According to Inclusive Employers, inclusion “an overarching culture encompassing diversity, equality, and many other aspects of our working lives.
“It would be naïve to think that by focusing on inclusion, we automatically mitigate the inequalities that exist in the workplace,” the organisation adds.
“With inclusion as our objective, we are much more likely to see greater diversity in our workforces, fair treatment of everyone and greater equality of opportunities as outcomes.”
Benefits of inclusion?
Improved retention: Creating a more inclusive workplace where employee needs are met (e.g. flexible working) increases the chances of them wanting to stick around. In fact, one survey found that more than half of UK workers said they would leave a non-inclusive workplace.
Attracts a wider range of talent: If your company has a reputation for having a great work-life balance, flexibility and being inclusive of employees from all walks of life, then guess what? Every man and his dog will want to work for your company!
More positive work environment: A happy workplace is a more productive workplace. Trust us, your team will be more motivated in a company where they feel seen/are treated with fairness and respect.
New perspectives and better decision making: A diversified workforce means a diversified approach to problem solving. Homogenous teams, on the other hand, are more likely to make decisions slower according to research.
