Project Closure and Evaluation: top tips for project managers

Whether you’re new to project management or just need a reminder, this blog offers an overview of best practices for project closure and evaluation.

What is project closure?

Project closure is the final stage of a project - and like the last puzzle piece, it is crucial to the overall picture. Therefore it needs to be done right. As the project manager, it is your responsibility to review the project deliverables and ensure everything has been completed as planned.

You will also rate the project’s overall performance, offering observations and feedback that the team can take on board for future projects.

Top tips for project closure and evaluation?

1.Plan for Closure and Evaluation from the Start

Your project plan should include a section on project closure and evaluation. This section should outline the criteria for success, how the project will be evaluated, and who will be involved in the evaluation.

2. Arrange a project post-mortem meeting

Learning from your experiences is key to improving your skills as a project manager, and as a team. Now that the project is over, you have time to calmly review what went well, as well as what could be improved next time.

3. Get your admin out of the way

With being a project manager also comes paperwork, and a lot of it. Don’t forget to check all your paperwork has been signed off and approved by stakeholders - including closing contracts with third parties or vendors. Invoices and fees should also be double-checked so you can be confident that all costs related to the project have been paid for.

4. Organise documents

Before you head down to the pub to celebrate project completion, make sure you archive your files in case you need to retrieve them at a future point. Colour code, label and make notes (i.e. make things easy for future you!).

5. Celebrate Success

It is important to celebrate the success of the project with all stakeholders. This can include hosting a project celebration event or distributing a project completion report.

We hope you found this advice helpful and good luck with your next project!
