Plastic Free July: Why we must limit our use of construction plastics

The construction industry has made significant progress in adopting sustainable practices, however, there is still one area that demands immediate attention: the use of construction plastics.

While plastics offer convenience and versatility in building projects, their negative impact on the environment and human health cannot be ignored - especially considering that the construction sector consumes 20% of all plastics produced globally each year.

In the spirit of ‘Plastic Free July’, this blog delves into the reasons why we must limit our use of construction plastics and explores alternative solutions for a more sustainable built environment.

Why do we need to limit our use of construction plastics?

1. Waste generation

Construction plastics, often non-biodegradable, accumulate in landfills and ecosystems, posing long-term risks to the environment and wildlife. By reducing the use of plastics in construction, we can minimise waste generation and promote more sustainable waste management practices. Alternative materials and construction methods can help us achieve this goal.

2. Health implications

Up to 88% of chemicals in everyday plastic products, including common construction finishes, leach out into the environment during use. Furthermore, 2,000+ additives are used in construction industry plastics, of which 25% were classified as EU substances of concern.

By reducing our reliance on construction plastics, we can create healthier indoor and outdoor environments for everyone.

3. Microplastic pollution

Plastics degrade over time, breaking down into microplastics, which are tiny particles that pose serious threats to ecosystems. These microplastics can contaminate water bodies, soil, and even the air we breathe. Construction activities that involve the use of plastics can contribute to the dispersion of microplastics, ultimately affecting human health and wildlife. By limiting our use of construction plastics, we can reduce the release of microplastics into the environment and protect our ecosystems.
