Struggling to manage your time at work effectively? Here’s a few strategies to help you out…
Make a list
Sounds obvious, right? But you’d be surprised how many professionals are so run off their feet that they forget to start with the basics. We recommend starting each day with a written list (writing helps with memory more than typing) so you can tick tasks off as you go along. Plus, there’s something super satisfying about completing a to-do list…
Organise by priority
Indentify your highest value tasks for the day and let these take top priority. Work your way down so that if something gets thrown on your plate last minute, only low priority admin will suffer. A good rule of thumb is to consider how many people will be impacted by a given task - usually, the more people involved, the higher the importance. On the other hand, a low priority task is often internal and falls under the category of general admin, such as helping your line manager edit a spreadsheet.
Flexibility is key
In the white-collar world, uncertainty and change are to be expected. Hence, it is crucial to prepare for every possibility and find a way to ensure the big stuff will get done on time despite any sudden surprises.
Know when to call it it day
Sometimes you can’t do everything you set out to do that day. As long as you’re keeping clients happy and meeting crucial deadlines then it’s OK to finish your day having a few tasks left over for the next morning. Learn to recognise when you’re overworking as to avoid burnout (which can impact your work and productivity in the longer run if ignored).
Set boundaries
Tried all of the above and still running out of time? Perhaps it’s a sign to talk to your boss about reducing your workload or finding different solutions to help you meet those all-important deadlines.
