Maintaining connections in a hybrid work settings

Since the Covid-19 pandemic flipped our working habits upside down, many companies have come to realise the affordances of hybrid working. From improved work-life balance to higher levels of employee satisfaction and better retention rates - there’s a lot to like. But how do we maintain connections in hybrid work settings?

In this blog, we take a deep dive into the world of hybrid work and look at ways in which we can maintain connections with colleagues, regardless of whether we’re in the same room with them or separated by land and sea!

Clear communication and expectation-setting

Things can easily get lost in translation when half of the team is working from home while the others are in the office. Effective communication ensures that everyone is on the same page, reducing the risk of errors and confusion. In addition, setting your team clear goals and setting expectations at the beginning of each day prevents ambiguity and ultimately ensures all tasks are streamlined and free from error. We recommend having a team meeting each morning so that you can ensure everyone is on the same page and knows what they’re doing that day.

Prioritise one-to-ones

We know work gets busy, and sometimes that means cancelling non-essential meetings, including those one-to-ones with your team. However, regular check-ins are paramount to maintaining connections - especially in hybrid environments. Not only does this give your team the chance to voice any concerns they may be facing that week, but also allows you to build a stronger rapport with your colleagues as individuals.

Organise a regular ‘team’ day in the office

There’s no point in hybrid work if your team all come into the office on different days. Why not set a day that suits everyone to come in once a week (it could be less frequent than this depending on the level of flexibility at your company). This way, you can all catch up face-to-face, and hey, you might as well enjoy a team lunch at Nandos while you’re at it…

Team building

Team building days are a foolproof strategy when it comes to maintaining connections at work as they entail collaboration, trust and communication (they’re often a pretty good laugh too!). While it is probably more effective to host a team-building day in the real world, you could also consider organising a virtual one if this works better for your company.

Technology is still your friend

While many of us are still recovering from post-pandemic Zoom fatigue, let’s not brush technology aside completely. After all, technology is a great way to keep people connected in hybrid settings - even if it’s just a work WhatsApp chat used solely to organise socials. Consider the tech your company has available and use it to your advantage, making sure teams can communicate easily and effectively…regardless of where they are in the world.
