Ten new skyscrapers will grace London’s city centre, with further towers planned for construction over the coming years.
The chairman of London City’s planning and transportation committee, Shravan Joshi, said that the buildings will transform the skyline of the financial centre.
Applications for the construction work are already underway, one of which is a 63-storey property at 55 Bishopsgate. Standing at 935ft, it would be one of the tallest developments in the UK.
The other is a 32-storey tower at 85 Gracechurch Street, by Leadenhall Market which would feature a 850 square metre food hall and 20,000 square metres of office space.
However, concerns about whether this building would obstruct views of St Paul’s Cathedral have been raised by Historic England and Westminster City Council.
A final decision on the construction work is expected by March.
South Bank could also be welcoming three new tower blocks - the tallest being 25 storeys high - depending on government plans.
There is a dispute as to whether the construction project would harm the area’s heritage, but City Hall said this damage would be overruled by the public benefits and job opportunities the development would provide.
An additional 8 buildings could be built in the City Of London if they receive planning permission.
Mr Joshi added that the increasing number of planning applications emphasises London’s resilience post-Covid and offers a “vote of confidence in the City’s continuing status as a world-leading business hub”.
