Did you land a big interview? Congratulations! Now it’s time to prepare so you can impress your potential employer while remaining calm and collected. Here are some of our top tips for your next video interview…
Prompts, prompts, prompts
One of the advantages of interviewing virtually is that you can give yourself little prompts without anyone knowing. We’d recommend printing off your CV and make notes on any skills/questions you think might crop up. However, it is important to ensure these post-its aren’t in sight/don’t make it obvious that you’re reading when on camera. You can do this by sticking your notes to the top of your laptop so you can still maintain eye contact with the interviewer.
Confident body language
Just because the interview is through a screen, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t follow basic interview etiquette - of which a big factor is body language. In fact, research suggests that a whopping 55% of what is picked up in conversation is nonverbal; while your words only account for 7% (the remaining 38% is how you say it). Hence, it’s vital to sit up straight, maintain eye contact and smile if you want to win your potential employer over.
Clear background
Your potential employer likely has very little interest in the interior design of your kitchen - nor do they want to see the stack of dishes you’ve neglected to wash up. So, make sure to double-check what is behind you before you turn your camera on. If possible, try positioning yourself in front of a plain wall so your interviewer doesn’t get distracted and can focus on all the great things you have to say!
Dress the part
While most of us work from home in our pyjamas, interviews are a slightly different kettle of fish. Dress to impress as you would in an in-person interview to show that you take the role seriously (you can still wear your joggers as long as you don’t stand up!).
Confidence is key, so remember to take a deep breath, relax and dazzle the panel!
