Harnessing the power of non-verbal communication: advice for your next interview

You’ve got the qualifications, and experience and know the company inside out - but how can you come across as a confident and desirable candidate?

Carr on reading to find out how to harness the power of non-verbal communication in your next interview.

1. Posture is make or break

Whether your interview is face-to-face, or via good old-fashioned Zoom (or Team’s, we don’t discriminate), posture is make or break. In fact, posture can affect your breathing and, subsequently, your confidence. Slumping or hunching can restrict your lung capacity, making you feel more anxious and less capable. In contrast, proper posture allows for deeper, more controlled breathing, which can help you stay calm and composed under pressure. Plus, no one’s going to hire you if you look like you’ve got a tummy ache!

2. Dress professionally

While it may sound a little outdated, dressing smart for an interview is always the best port of call. Even if you soon come to find your CEO is happy to sport a pair of trackies on ‘casual Fridays’, it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed in an interview. Looking good will also naturally boost your confidence and allow you to present your best self to your prospective employer.

3. Eye contact

Last but not least, it's crucial to sustain consistent eye contact during the interview. Doing so not only conveys your genuine interest in the conversation but also exudes confidence and professionalism. Eye contact also helps establish a connection between you and the interviewer. This rapport can create a positive impression and make the interview feel more like a productive dialogue rather than a one-sided interrogation.

So, next time you step into an interview don’t leave your non-verbal communication at the door! It can really make a difference to your chances of landing the job - especially in today’s competitive job market.
