With 2023 well and truly upon us, it’s time to consider what fit out trends we can expect over the course of the year, and what they mean for the user experience.
AI
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly popular and we have seen it improve the user experience in a number of sectors. Retail is a good example of a space which is utilising AI as a way to personalise the consumer journey and make it more immersive. We’ve all seen this technology at work in shops such as Amazon Go, which uses AI to run a checkoutless shopping experience. Sephora is also a pioneer in the AI landscape, with a number of its stores leveraging AI to help match customers to their perfect shade of foundation in-store. Of course, the built environment is also taking advantage of this groundbreaking technology to improve the efficiency of construction projects and ensure the safety of workers on-site. It is very likely artificial intelligence will continue to revolutionise fit-out designs, so watch this space!
Sustainable fit outs
With the race to net-zero by 2050 very much under the spotlight, it’s no surprise that companies are looking to invest in more sustainable building designs. This year, we can expect to see a rise in eco-friendly materials such as bamboo, recycled plastic and cork - as well as energy saving design choices, like motion sensor lights. UX driven
In 2023, fit out will be all about the user experience (UX). This means designs which enable seamless and memorable experiences for the customer/visitor/worker etc. For example, interactive displays in shops offer not only an entertainment factor, but allows the consumer to better understand the brand and feel a part of a wider community. Overall, a good user experience comes down to ease of use, maximum enjoyment and meeting the individual's needs.
Increased focus on flexible working
As we emerge from the ashes of the pandemic, we have seen flexible working become the norm for businesses up and down the country. To keep up with this change, we need to rethink the function of offices in terms of how they accommodate flexible work. For example, having designated spaces for virtual meetings is arguably essential to companies who regularly communicate with their team via Zoom or Google Meet. Offices that allow employees to easily plug-and-play their laptops is also important for the modern workforce - this may mean discarding the seating plan and swapping it for hot desking.
Here at Pillar Partnership, we’re excited to see how these fit out trends help revolutionise the user experience and reinvent spaces across a variety of sectors.
