An exciting new construction project is being rolled out in Saudi Arabia which will reimagine sustainable development in a way which has never been seen before.
The four megacities - Sindala, Trojena, THE LINE and Oxagon - are hoped to attract people from around the world with its idiosyncratic design, which boosts a range of environmentally friendly attributes.
The LINE, which was inspired by Spanish urban planner Arturo Soria y Mata’s ‘linear city’, has been named as the flagship city of the project.
When completed, THE LINE will have the capacity for 9 million residents, despite only being 200 metres wide and 500 metres tall.
As sustainable living is at the heart of the futuristic megacity, it will run on 100% renewable energy and be free of cars and emissions.
More interestingly, perhaps, is THE LINE’s mirrored exterior, which has been designed to blend in with nature to cause as little disruption to wildlife as possible.
In terms of transport, there will be a high-speed train service with an overall transit time of 20 minutes. Plus, thanks to THE LINE’s Zero Gravity Urbanism-inspired layout, inhabitants can access all the space’s facilities within five minutes on foot.
His Royal Highness Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Board of Directors said, “At THE LINE’s launch last year, we committed to a civilizational revolution that puts humans first based on a radical change in urban planning. The designs revealed today for the city's vertically layered communities will challenge the traditional flat, horizontal cities and create a model for nature preservation and enhanced human livability. THE LINE will tackle the challenges facing humanity in urban life today and will shine a light on alternative ways to live.”
“We cannot ignore the livability and environmental crises facing our world’s cities, and NEOM is at the forefront of delivering new and imaginative solutions to address these issues. NEOM is leading a team of the brightest minds in architecture, engineering and construction to make the idea of building upwards a reality.”
When will THE LINE be completed by?
Although earthwork began back in 2021, the construction timeline has not been set in stone. However, sources suggest that we can expect to see THE LINE open its doors to keen city-dwellers by 2030.
Pillar Partnership is very excited to see yet another incredible development in the construction world and looks forward to the end result!
