Construction industry given green light for hiring overseas

Builders to be added to the ‘shortage occupation list’ to help tackle labour shortages, which have experienced a seismic increase since Brexit.

This means companies can get visas for new hires moving from across seas to help strengthen their workforces.

Currently, the salary required to obtain a skilled worker visa is £25,600 - however, in this case it would be lowered to £20,480.

According to the Financial Times, the government's Migration Advisory Committee has advised that plasterers, roofers and bricklayers should be included on the shortage list.

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) welcomed the news, having previously stated that it was a “mistake” to cut off EU labour.

In an article for The Independent, Brian Berry, chief executive of FMB, said this move from ministers will:“help address the current skills shortages in the construction industry”, adding: “There still needs to be investment in UK-based training to train the next generation of builders.”

A spokesperson for the Home Builders Federation (HBF) said: “If we are to increase housing supply and deliver the government’s housing target it is essential we have continued access to skilled labour from abroad.

“The industry is working hard to ensure that there is sufficient depth in the home-grown workforce but in the interim, access to foreign labour is required to plug capacity gaps.”
