Becoming a quantity surveyor: everything you need to know

Thinking of becoming a quantity surveyor? Carry on reading to find out what skills are required, what a typical day looks like - and most importantly, if it’s the right fit for you!

What does a day-in-the-life look like?

Quantity surveyors typically work 37 to 40 hours per week, with the odd weekend job now and again. Although, those working for the local authorities will usually follow the standard 9-to-5, 7 days a week structure. Most of our roles are office-based with construction site visits included.

Depending on the type of role, your responsibilities will vary but in general, quantity surveyors are responsible for overseeing contractual matters related to construction projects. This includes preparing bills, advising contractors and engineers on financial constraints of the project and examining contract documents.

Do I have the right qualifications?

To get a job as a quantity surveyor, you are required to complete a degree in quantity surveying or commercial management. This needs to be accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

If you have a degree in a related area such as construction, civil engineering, economics, project management etc. then you are eligible to take a RICS-accredited postgraduate conversion course. The duration of the postgraduate degree is 1 year, and 2 for those studying part-time.

Join RICS

Once you have the correct qualifications, you can become a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). To qualify as an Associate or Chartered member, you will have to pass a number of assessments. This membership is necessary if you wish to call yourself a ‘chartered’ quantity surveyor.

Salary expectations

On average, quantity surveyors can earn anywhere between £28,000 to £120,000 depending on experience, skills and location. At Pillar Partnership, we offer a range of quantity surveyor roles which cater to different levels of experience.
