4 ways to improve diversity in the built environment workplace

Diversity of talent is something the built environment has struggled with for quite some time - and although we’re seeing improvements, there is still a long way to go. In this blog, we look at how the construction sector can support inclusivity, equality and diversity during Black History Month and beyond.

1.Implement a ‘no bystander’ policy

Make it clear to employees there is a zero-tolerance attitude towards discriminatory behaviour and that it should be called out and reported immediately. By intervening and taking disciplinary action, your company shows that it is an ally while discouraging workers from making racist remarks or exhibiting prejudiced attitudes.

2.Education is key

It’s one thing calling out discrimaination, but if the guilty party only stops because of the consequences then no real progress is being made. To combat this, consider introducing mandatory training programmes on diversity and inclusion to your company. This will help create a safer environment where everyone respects one another and appreciates cultural differences.

3.Communication, communication, communication

While company policies and training days shouldn’t go amiss, it is important for management to be transparent about why these actions are needed to create a more inclusive environment on-site and in turn, a better place to work. By having an open dialogue around equality, diversity and inclusion, it removes any taboo and allows colleagues the space to ask questions and develop their understanding where they may not be sure.

4.Recruitment

Promoting diversity starts with the recruitment process. Make sure your hiring decisions are never rooted in bias and that your job descriptions are inclusive. This means using thoughtful language which caters to a wide variety of candidates. Building a relationship with recruitment agencies is a great way to ensure your job opportunities are reaching a diverse pool of potential hires.
