5 steps to improving your motivation for 2023

It's time to get motivated again and smash those career goals! We hope you managed to take some time to rest over the festive period and if you're struggling to settle back into work now, we've got some great tips to help.

1. Set yourself goals

Make a list of both personal and work goals that you want to work towards or achieve this year. Ensure they are challenging but realistic too! For example, you may wish to progress in your field by learning a new skill. Whether this be gaining a new certification, or simply working on developing a soft skill - any steps you take to improve your professional self is always positive. Once you decide on a goal, figure out the steps needed to reach it and give yourself a realistic timeframe.

2. Reward yourself

Split your long-term goals up into smaller tasks/achievements and rewards yourself after hitting them. For example, if you’re working towards a new qualification you may attend a lecture/online class each week. Why not treat yourself to a celebratory glass of wine afterwards? Or reward yourself by watching an episode of your favourite show? Whatever the reward, having a system like this in place will help keep you motivated and give you something to look forward to each time.

3. Spark some inspiration

Find some motivational podcasts, videos, books, images or quotes to get inspired. There are so many resources out there, have a look for ones that relate to your goals!

Here’s a few of our personal recommendations:

4. Don’t forget to take breaks

While it’s great that you’re setting yourself goals and working hard to achieve them, don’t forget to take breaks for your mental health. Block out at least an hour a day to spend with your friends and family, or doing a hobby that you enjoy. Not only is this imperative to preventing burnout, but will also help improve your productivity in the long run. Studies have shown that humans can only concentrate on the same topic for around 45 minutes before their brains start to disengage. Using this as a benchmark, it might be wise to stretch your legs every hour by going to make a coffee, or even going outside for 5 minutes to let your eyes refocus and give your brain a breather.

5.Keep a positive attitude

A negative attitude paired with a negative problem can cause a slump in motivation, so stay positive and find solutions instead. Again, it is useful to break your goals down into manageable chunks - try writing down your goals for the day when you wake up so they are fresh in your mind. Pair this with a list of things you are grateful for which you can return back to at the end of the day. Remember, nobody is perfect and it’s normal to have good days and bad days!
