Considering a role in construction? Here’s 5 soft skills you need to ace!
1.Communication
Clear communication is paramount to bringing your team together and ultimately, finishing the job. Plus, having an awareness of how you speak to different people across the board is highly important e.g. internal office vs client. Employers also will take your ability to communicate effectively into consideration during the hiring process, so make sure you are as clear and concise as possible. If you’re new to the world of construction, we recommend you brush up on your industry jargon!
2.Team orientated
Working as part of a team often comes hand in hand with working in construction, as a number of organisations are usually involved with each project. That means the ideal candidate is someone who can build and maintain professional relationships effortlessly. Building rapport with people across the board will also establish you as a trustworthy name in the industry. This also means getting to know your team, asking questions and making an overall effort to engage with colleagues, clients and stakeholders.
3.Critically minded
Problem solving is central to working in the built environment so being critically minded will give you a competitive advantage. New technologies, ideas and approaches are always being introduced in the world of construction so there are many challenges out there that haven’t even been solved yet. That’s why it’s important to be sharp-minded and always ready to overcome unanticipated hurdles.
4.Organisation
When working on any project, it is important to demonstrate your commitment - and that means being on your A game when it comes to organisation. In order to keep things ticking along, you need to be meeting project deadlines. Otherwise you risk delaying the project’s progress, as well as your reputation within the business.Make sure to highlight your organisation skills on your CV within your work experience section (e.g. a time when you helped complete a project ahead of schedule).
5.Flexibility
Reiterating the point above, candidates need to be flexible and ready for anything! Whether you’re being relocated or something has delayed the project so you need to reshuffle your priorities, a lot can change fast in construction so you need to stay on your toes.
